5 Questions for Interviewing Real Estate Agents

Choosing a real estate agent is one of the more underrated decisions in the homebuying process. Most buyers work with the first agent they meet. Taking a little time to interview a couple of candidates can make a meaningful difference.

Here are five questions worth asking.

1. What does your typical process look like for a buyer in my situation?

A good agent should be able to walk you through what to expect — from initial search to offer to closing. This reveals whether they have a clear system or are making it up as they go. It also tells you how well they listen, since the answer should be somewhat tailored to what you've shared about your situation.

2. How well do you know this specific market?

Local knowledge is one of the most valuable things a buyer's agent brings to the table. You want someone who knows which neighborhoods are changing, what comparable homes have actually sold for (not just listed at), and what's likely to make or break a competitive offer in the current market. Generic answers here are a yellow flag.

3. What do you enjoy most about working with buyers?

This isn't a throwaway question. An agent who genuinely enjoys helping buyers will talk about it with some enthusiasm and specificity. Someone going through the motions will give a vague answer. You're spending a significant amount of time with this person during a high-stakes process — their engagement matters.

4. What parts of the job do you find most challenging?

Honesty here is a good sign. Every experienced agent will have an honest answer — maybe it's negotiation under pressure, maybe it's managing client expectations, maybe it's the uncertainty of competitive markets. What you're listening for is self-awareness and how they handle the hard parts, not whether hard parts exist.

5. Why are you the right fit for me specifically?

This is the question that separates agents who've thought about you from agents who've given you the standard pitch. A strong answer connects something they know about your goals or situation to why their background or approach is a good match.
