Look for Multi-Purpose Items
Before adding more storage, take stock of what you're actually storing. The same logic applies to tools and sports equipment: if you only use something once a year, it might be more practical to borrow or rent it than to store it year-round.
Move Outdoor Gear Outside
If your garage or basement is overflowing with items that belong outdoors, getting them closer to where you actually use them frees up significant interior space. A small shed, a deck box, or even weatherproof wall hooks on an exterior wall can house bikes, garden tools, and sports equipment without crowding your living areas.
Pare Down With Intention
No storage system works as well as having less to store. A periodic review — even just once a year — can surface items you've forgotten, duplicates, and things you genuinely no longer need. Selling, donating, or discarding those items creates space without buying a single bin or shelf.
