Fall Yard Maintenance Tips for the Homeowner

Fall is a natural checkpoint for homeowners. The weather is mild enough to work outside comfortably, and many of the steps you take now prevent more costly problems once colder months arrive.

Clean Your Gutters Before the Rain and Wind Pick Up

Gutters that are clogged with leaves and debris can't do their job — and that job matters. When water can't flow freely through your gutters and away from the foundation, it can back up under roofing materials or run down exterior walls. Over time, that leads to water intrusion, rot, and sometimes foundation issues that are expensive to address.

Cleaning gutters at least once in the fall, after most of the leaves have dropped, is one of the highest-value maintenance tasks you can do. If you want to reduce future maintenance, gutter guards — plastic or metal screens that fit over the opening — can slow the buildup significantly.

Check the Seals on Windows and Doors

Drafts around windows and doors don't just make your home uncomfortable — they drive up heating costs. Run your hand along the edges of exterior doors and windows on a windy day; if you feel airflow, you have a leak worth addressing. In many cases, a tube of caulk and fresh weatherstripping are all it takes to seal smaller gaps. Older windows that are beyond resealing may warrant replacement, especially if they're single-pane.

This is also a good time to make sure storm windows are in place if your home has them.

Have Your Fireplace Inspected Before First Use

If you have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, annual inspection and cleaning isn't just about performance — it's a safety matter. Creosote, a byproduct of burning wood, can accumulate in the flue and become a fire hazard. A certified chimney sweep can evaluate the condition of your firebox, flue liner, and damper, and let you know what maintenance is due.

Gas fireplaces also benefit from periodic professional inspection, particularly if they haven't been used in a while.

A Few More Items Worth Checking

  • Drain and store garden hoses; shut off exterior water spigots if your climate calls for it
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries
  • Schedule any HVAC maintenance before the heating season begins
